++++I've never heard of him. Whilst this isn't particularly convincing as evidence, England is a small country, and if anyone's any good, one tends to have heard of them, even if only obliquely. "Having competed at World Championship Level" (as Dave Flower quotes from The Times) means more or less nothing. A so-called World Chamionship Simultaneous Pairs or something similarly inane would cover that, wouldn't it?

Well, it really shouldn't. It should, in the case of an English player, mean playing for England in the Bermuda Bowl or the Olympiad. Anything less should be specified.

You're not kidding - I'm just back from two weeks cycling in the UK where it turned out we were cycling with a Welsh national player (Adrian Thomas). We even played bridge with him in Edinburgh.

In fact, Canadian radio & TV repeatedly called local player Joe Currie a "World Champion" after winning the Saturday session of the World Simultaneous Pairs last month. He's 94 and I certainly don't begrudge him the title, but I know _he'd_ rather have won a WBF championship!
No, it says he is "a former world championship bridge player", by which I assume they mean that he had played in the World Championship. But I think even that more modest claim is false, as though I'm British I've never previously heard of him. -- John Hall

It's just occurred to me that perhaps he could have played in the Bermuda Bowl for some country other than England/GB. Somewhere like Barbados or Malta, maybe. -- John Hall

The year of 1998 would match the media stories, though. I wonder if the murdering Stephen Green could have claimed credit at his club for the other's successes, and that's where the media picked it up from? -- John Hall

++++Well, frankly, that means he had a passport, the entry fee and was a player in good standing with his country association. Same for J Osgood (never heard of him, either). This isn't to denigrate them, particularly, but this isn't the same as being selected to play for your country, and while there may be some quality control at the door, there's not much. It's possibly the press asking what his finest hour/ proudest moment was and someone citing the above. Makes it much easier to then just categorise him as having played at World Chamionship Level, implying he's one of the greats.

There certainly were various reports that did refer to him as a World Champion, apparently because he played at Lille.

From what I heard, the Helle 2003 is the Warwickshire Steve Green, the Lille 1998 is the murdering Stephen Green.

Steve and I (the non-murdering one) were partners and are friends. I thought I'd posted about this elsewhere or here -- but at the risk of repeating myself Steve the bridgeplayer took the coverage in good humour. His wife Ruth is in good health and when Steve was involved in opening a new club in Coventry (as I recall) he made a speech about how the cops had kindly let him out for the ceremony.
Bridgeplaying Stev has been on the fringe of UK selection many times and I think has a Crockfords title; we played Junior bridge together 27 years ago...how time flies.
